Thank God we humans don't need to go through the same exercise in finding our mates. Otherwise, I'd still be single!

An odd mix of Islam, politics, and off-the-wall news as seen by an American Muslim living in limbo.

HILARIOUS! I love the first one, it's how the war on terror is conducted!!!!
The second one, I don't know, Naeem, I think it would make it ALOT easier to get married! :-)

on a totaly unrelated note..im intersting in knowing more about what kind of school your kids attend in riyadh and how you find the schooling/teachers to be? and more importantly the kids i guess?
also, what opportunities does your wife have to keep her head on straight in a place where im guessing the most she can do is go to the mall 5 days a week or socialize with freinds?
Their dance is pretty funny and hilarious ........ :-)

AA- Sahra,
"The second one, I don't know, Naeem, I think it would make it ALOT easier to get married! :-)"
LOL! You women would REALLY get a kick outta that, wouldn't you? :-P
AA- Anon,
Interesting question about the schools in Riyadh. They definitely aren't as 'Islamic' as the Muslim schools in the West. The schools in the west are more geared towards preserving the children's Muslim identity in a predominantly non-Muslim environment. The schools here obviously don't have that priority, so they are more about providing a better education.
So I find myself spending more time on tarbiyya (islamic upbringing) with my children, which actually is a very good thing. One of my complaints about Muslim schools in the west is that many parents delegate the responsibility of tarbiyya to the school, feeling they've fulfilled their duties by passing on this most critical of parenting obligations.
The school my kids go to is an English-based international school made up of Muslim teachers and students. I'm OK with it...nothing amazing, basically sufficient.
About my wife, there is more than shopping and socializing, like the Saudi outdoors. Plus, there are many deen-oriented organizations geared towards sisters that offer classes, Quran memorization, and so on. Not sure what made you conclude that only shopping and friends is available for women here in Riyadh...
Do you live in Saudia?
Anon,
Woops, I forgot to include the link to an older post I did on the Saudi Outdoors. I included it this time...
well the reason i assumed the bit about shopping and malls is that that's sort of what i hear is easily available to women.
as for quran classes, what if your have young children?
and ofcourse for the mall or the quran class or any other class in the DAYTIME, you would either need a driver or your husband to take you?
Now im sure every woman in saudi doesnt have access to a driver as I'm sure that requires a certain salary level..so what is the solution?
Im someone who mayyyy(or may not) move there and i know and appreciate the good points of living there. sometimes the annoyances of saudi islam do get under my skin and hence the tone of my question. Please excuse the tone :-)

"well the reason i assumed the bit about shopping and malls is that that's sort of what i hear is easily available to women."
Don't get me wrong, shopping is the national pastime with so many men not helping their wives find more productive alternatives. One needs to be very proactive to find a replacement.
"as for quran classes, what if your have young children?"
Well, some places provide day care services, but that is clearly a problem. Not really sure what other options are out there...
"Now im sure every woman in saudi doesnt have access to a driver as I'm sure that requires a certain salary level..so what is the solution?"
Yes that is true. Many people make use of taxis.

Well, your half way to winning the battle by acknowleding the existence of 'saudi islam'. :-) Too often, people come with such high expectations that Islam here is perfect. Sadly its FAAAR from that.
I hope you best of luck in your possible move over here. Not sure if you read this post from a while back explaining why we are here.
