Saudi woman driving [pic]

Friday, July 25, 2008

Well, sort of:

Under the picture of the woman driving is text saying 'Say YES to women driving'.

Sorry for the poor quality of the pic, but I had to quickly snap it while driving. I was extremely shocked to see a sticker as brazen as this one, especially in Riyadh (this sort of stuff is more expected from the more liberal Jeddah).

Of course, not everyone shares the above driver's sentiments. Abu Ilyas has an interesting picture from the other side.

Is that something wrong about woman driving in Saudi?

Surely that a lot of women really good at driving, conversely as a male, I can only drive in the driving school.

In your photo the woman appears to be without hijab which is even more brazen when you consider that the photo was taken in Riyadh.

Also, she is apparently driving so fast that it's causing her hair to go horizontal. From this I can conclude that she'll fit in perfectly well with a large percentage of the drivers already on the roads here.

AA-

I purposefully didn't comment on the issue of women driving (for those who don't know, Saudi doesn't allow women to drive) because I seriously believe its such a non-issue...not even worthy of debate. Muslim women the world over are driving without incident, so it really makes no sense... anyways...

Abu Ilyas, good point on the lack of hijab. That really ratchets up the level of boldness in the sticker.

Thanks Suroor, and that's her hair, not her scarf.

Im surprised is hasnt been scratched off...I placed a sticker of the US flag on my jeep...within hours the flag had been defaced...people have no respect for private property here. Meanwhile most of the cars around here have Bahrain flags on them...Ive never felt the desire to deface one of them...even though I have suffered a great deal from this country and its laws and culture etc. Personal property is still personal property. (sorry for the tangent...mood is BAD today)

GO WOMEN DRIVERS! driving too fast and making dangerous idiots of yourselves on the roads of Saudi should be an equal opportunity enjoyable pass time.
