I want to thank Salon and Osman Adnan for finally explaining to me how I can become a loyal Muslim American. Never having felt comfortable with being just a Muslim American, I have scoured the planet endlessly searching for the recipe for true loyalty to my birth-nation.
Finally, I have discovered it: Attend a Catholic school, celebrate bar mitzvahs and Christmas parties, have an Irish best friend (preferably born on 4th of July), join the military service, keep public displays of your Muslim faith to a minimum and carry a flag of the USA in your back pocket in case some pathetic Muslim child in some far-off pathetic land needs a reminder of your nation's unending benevolence - 'Hey, please don't mind the drone attack that just wiped out your entire village and uhmm, yeah, ignore our propping up brutal dictators across the Muslim world and go ahead and overlook our occupation of two major Muslim nations because, well, Imma teach you to read English. Oh and here's a flag of the good 'ol Stars and Stripes - just promise me you won't burn it...har-har, just kidding. But seriously, don't burn it.'
Yessiree-bob, a good 'ol Loyal Muslim American.

As salaam alaikum Naeem! May Allah accept our fasting and ibadah during Rahmadan.
I was just thinking the yesterday that you haven't posted anything in awhile.
Man, what a suck-up. It made me sick to my stomach how much he was trying to appear non-muslim to appease others. Perhaps it's no coincidence that as he's "proving" how "American" he is by celebrating christmas, Bar-Mitzvahs, and having non-muslim relatives he "forgets" to mention if he ever celebrates Ramadan, Eid, or even observes any Muslim rituals. Hmm ?
Greg
assalamu aleikum,
brilliant! that's all I wanted to know :D *sighs* kinda agree with Greg there.
Ramadan Kareem brother. Keep postin!
Sigh, can you blame someone who was raised in such a way?
On the contrary, someone needs to respond to that from a more mainstream and accurate perspective.
Nice analysis of it though. Just a tad bit harsh lol.
-Mk-
Ramadhan Mubarak to you brother long time no read LOL! And thanks for the snarky reply to such a ridiculous article. I really believe that the only way Muslims in the West will ever be "welcome" is if they become
a)ex-Muslims (Murtab)
b)liberal Westernized Muslims
And even then there's no guarantee of your full-fledged acceptance because of the constant suspicion and scrutiny that will follow you around. Just ask Obama how many times will he have to keep on saying that he's not Muslim people still believe he's a secret terrorist sympathizer and Muslim Manchurian Candidate(MC refers to someone attaining the seat of power within a Western freedom loving democracy in order to subvert it from within. Communism used to be that bogeyman today it's Islam).

@AbuYasmeen, yeah, just keeping a low profile in these blessed days...but this story awoke me from my slumber. :-)
@Greg, yeah, I too think that the only Muslim acceptable to mainstream America is a secular Muslim.
@Proselyytti, Ramadan Mubarak to you!
@MK, a bit harsh, eh? How would you have responded buddy?? :-)
@R, yup (nodding in full agreement)
*sigh*
khalid baig hit it on the dot. nationalism is killing islam.
nice post.
AOA Naeem Sahib
Please don't take it personally if I ask why you're reading this Salon POV by Adnan from a glass half-empty perspective? As an amreeki Muslamina..3rd gen Marylander. I too lost family and friends in the Twin Towers. Yet I also lost many relatives in Swat, who were kidnapped, tortured and executed by the so-called
" Taliban" whom we know are the true MC's of this lovely, once peaceful and pristeen part of Pakistan.
If Adnan is " giving back" to his homeland - regardless of his red, white and blue pride, why should we judge him? There are so many here in the USA and so many more in KSA who do not give a d_ _ n about such worthwhile deeds, who spend megabucks on macmansions and numerous luxuries, yet can't take the time or expense to help fellow countrymen in dire need.
Well, dear bro, unlike many who have decided to live in the land of our blessed Prophet
( SAW)- I cannot fathom doing the same as you. Why? mainly because I find your adopted temp country rulers and their extended family to be despotic, holier than thou munafiqs. So as a female, I could never consider living in KSA where saudis think nothing of drilling hot nails into a maid's hand as "reprimanding" her for God knows what. Are these people you live with human or Shetan?
Or what about cities such as Mecca, etc., that sell
"Stars for Bucks" whereby those Bucks going to fund extremist violent settlers invading lands once belonging to Palestinians? The grass is always greener on the other side I suppose..
I shall end with a glass half-full link for you. This link may give you food for thought. It's re some amreeki Muslamin taking a positive stance by educating the lost souls here in the States. Please do share this link with your readers, if you haven't already. Please forgive me if I seemed harsh or unfair.
Here is the link http://30mosques.com/
It's 30 Mosques in 30 days documentary which was aired all across the USA media channels here at the start of Ramadan.
May you and yours have a joyful Eid, Subhanallah.

Please read this as an alternative to what other USA based Muslamin are doing to educate and enlighten those who are in the dark re Islam.

BTW, I did find your POV a bit harsh..Adnan at least went back to the motherland to offer his services..regardless of his
" red, white and blue" enthusiasm. Rather than fault him for this mindset, please look at what goes on in your adopted country as well. " Bucks for Stars" ..OMG in Mecca of all places? Just one of many such double standards there my friend.
AA- Sara,
Fellow Baltimorons get a free pass here so don't worry about being too harsh. :-)
First of all, I'm no fanboy of Saudi society. I've written about the hypocrisy found here in Saudi (here and here). So, I'm not clear why you felt the need to go on a rant on the various sicknesses found here in KSA.
Secondly, what does any of that have to do with the Uncle Tom depiction of a Loyal Muslim American?
Am I so desperate to find good people that I have to commend Adnan for 'giving back' while serving as a tool for American Imperialism? No thank you, I'd rather find the millions who are helping without joining the US forces.
Finally, my post was less a judgment of Adnan and his service as it was the way he described himself and his 'loyalty'. I found it extremely problematic that Salon felt that he was worthy of the LOYAL label only after he listed his various 'credentials'.
what are they upto!!
Sad indeed…may Allah help us- ameen

Naeem, Please don't waste another thought on it. Trust me, America does NOT want you to be 'American'. You are where you belong and where you should STAY.
Slms.
What happened to you ? Are you alive. We're waiting for your next post.
