I recently listened to this very enlightening podcast episode by Lexicon Valley titled '30 million by 4'. It details a very interesting research that highlights the importance of engaging your young children in conversation. Anyone with preschool children would greatly benefit from the 20 minutes or so.

And I won't tell you what the title means...you'll have to listen to the podcast to figure it out. :-P

This was a very interesting pod cast. I plan to implement their findings with my 19 month old. I'm wondering if conversations heard from tv programs count toward word usage or is it just human conversation that matters
Greg
yes enjoyed it and plan to action from the findings. Fahad

@Greg, I was wondering the exact same question since they never mentioned the role of multimedia (TV, Internet, etc.). But I think it doesn't count as all socio-economic groups have equal access to those outlets. If it made a difference, I would think the lower class would be far ahead, no?
@Fahad, the age of original thought is over, we are now in the age of links and forwards. :-)
@Naeem: That does seem like a reasonable conclusion. I would suspect that the interaction they are probably addressing is of the physical variety especially since there has been numerous studies warning about the harm of too much TV watching by younger children.

P.S. Ramadan Kareem !!!
But what happens if you're past the 4 year old mark? Do all these principles just fall flat?
Or is that just the limit set by the research?
AA- DL,
I also had similar concerns, as three of my kids are older than 4. My gut feeling is that the basic blueprint is set by the age 4, but with serious effort it can be modified.
I'm considering buying their book and will try to share my thoughts once I get through it. Another book I was looking to review is 'Boys Adrift', an excellent book about raising boys in our modern culture. It really is worth reading, especially if you have young boys...
