I updated my blogroll to reflect some interesting blogs I've come across:

Umm Yasmin
UberPost Blog
The Great Theft (Charles's Blog)
JDsg's Blog

And I also added a new section for Saudi Bloggers. Enjoy!

=======

Here's a hilarious cartoon (originally printed in South Korea):

It was only after I stopped laughing that I realized the subtle racist implications, namely the stupidity of the black character versus the ingenuity of the two white guys. Did anyone else pick up on that?

And was the oriental partner aware of the smarter solution (thus revealing his own hidden racism) or was he simply as foolish as the black man?

Or am I simply over-analyzing this cartoon?

(h/t Neatorama)

=======

Finally, here is an interesting personality experiment. Look at the twirling lady below and see which way she's turning:

Basically, if you see her turning clockwise, you're a genius with a bright future. But if you think she's turning counter-clockwise, you're a failure doomed to be a loser for the rest of your life.

Guess which way I saw her turning? :-)

Seriously, here is what the experiment tells us:

If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.

Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction.

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS (Counter-Clockwise)
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS (Clockwise)
uses feeling
"big picture" oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking

I didnt pick up on the racial thing with the funny cartoon. And that turning lady thing is cool. I clearly saw her turning clock-wise :)

I concentrate hard and I saw her turning both ways. I meant, a few seconds I see her anti clockwise, then clockwise, then anti clockwise.

I can only see her turning clockwise... tried to see the anti-clockwise thing but can't! "Fantasy based" "Impetuous"... sounds like us right brainers are the biggest losers! lol

Salaam brother Naeem, thanks for the add.

Yeah, without question I saw many meanings in the cartoon, not just the subvertly racist one.

To a degree the compassion of the Asian and the Black man to even consider sacrifice (think Christian's perception of Jesus and "he died for me") to give another freedom in life while the two Whites showed better judgement but also selfishness, cannot be missed.

From a position within the Tasawwuf, it shows the Black man letting this world go favorably and others trying to hold onto it.

I think the cartoon also reaffirms how the status quo perceives the 'other'. They looked on at the Asian and the Black man, wondering why those two 'fools' didn't do it their way.

Just a quick quip.

Oh, let me also say, "was the Black guy stupid"? Of course!

AA-

@Muse, so you didn't pick up on the racism when you first read it, but how about after it was pointed out?

@Azlin, pretty impressive that you can switch between the two so easily. It takes some effort on my part to make the switch. You must be a genius who is doomed to be a loser. ;-)

@Stranger, haha...good one. One trick to making the switch is to not look directly at her, but look slightly to the side of the image.

@Charles, nice interpretations...very deep indeed. I was also thinking of another (sillier) thought - the oriental dude definitely knew what he was doing. After all, they're all PhD's, no? Sooo, he allowed his black mate to kill himself knowing the wiser solution. Now the question is why? I'm guessing he's pissed off at him for not helping him out as he got gang raped in prison.

I know, I have a sick mind. ;-)

@Suroor, not just doomed, but doomed to be a LOSER! :-D
